Science facts we can't get our heads around

British Science Week has got our editors thinking about the most memorable science facts they have come across over the years. In fact, they still can't quite get their heads around them now! Are you ready to have your mind blown? Prepare to be amazed...

1. Every bit of energy that has ever been used or needed, has always been here and will continue to be here.

2. Half of the cells in your body are not actually you, but germs and other microorganisms.

3. When talking about how much something weighs, you’re actually talking about mass. Mass is how much matter there is, so pounds and kilograms are measures of mass. Weight is actually a force, it’s how strongly gravity pulls.

4. Atoms are the tiny particles that make up every substance. You could fit two billion atoms on the full stop at the end of this sentence.

5. Earth’s interior produces 38 trillion watts of heat, which is 3,600 times more than the entire daily energy consumption of the USA.

6. The human brain is about 85 percent water, and bones are about 33 percent water.

7. When you ‘crack’ your knuckles, the noise you hear is actually popping bubbles of nitrogen gas, which is formed from the fluid in the joints.

8. Saturn’s moon Enceladus spews a jet of gas and ice from the region its south pole! This final fact has been taken from our forthcoming Curious Questions & Answers about the Solar System book, and here's a sneak peek at a cheeky Saturn in the book...
