Miles Kelly Publishing started working with The Books Bus, a charity dedicated to improving children’s lives through literacy, in early 2012, when we first sent books to areas of Africa.
Since this time, Miles Kelly's involvement with the organisation has grown rapidly and late-2014 saw managing director Gerard Kelly volunteer with The Book Bus in Africa. Upon his return, he's enthusiasm for the great cause and his tales of adventure inspired six members of the Miles Kelly team to pack up their bags and head to Africa to volunteer for two weeks!
The team, consisting of staff from the editorial, production, rights and marketing departments, spent time with children on a project in Livingstone, Zambia. The first week was spent at a holiday club, a programme created by The Book Bus, in the rural village of Muke, and the second, at the charity-funded Reading Room in Livingstone town.
During the time, Amy, Sarah, Katie, Caroline, Fran and Louise read aloud to hundreds of children, made lots of crafts and prepared their own lesson resources, often using Miles Kelly books as inspiration. They all had a very rewarding experience and are now looking at the world with different eyes.
Since arriving back in the office, Marketing Assistant Katie has commented:
“When the opportunity arose, I knew I had to go. It was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to help out with an amazing cause that is so closely related to my job, and to visit a beautiful country in the process. All six of us have had an emotional experience we will never forget and hope to put what we have seen and learnt to good use, continuing to work with The Book Bus and helping the incredible children they support.”
