Day 3. Make! An exploding volcano

February 18, 2015

The four planets closest to the Sun are smaller than the other four planets. All four rocky worlds have volcanoes, or had them in the past. Venus has more volcanoes than any other planet in the Solar System.

Volcanoes spew out molten rock called lava. It’s really easy to make your own erupting volcano experiment for kids to see this amazing event in action!

You will need
Plastic sheet, earth or damp sand, small bottle, baking soda, washing-up liquid, red and yellow food colouring, vinegar

How to make
1. On a plastic sheet, make your volcano out of earth or damp sand around a small bottle in the middle.
2. Add 3 tablespoons of baking soda and one tablespoon of washing-up liquid to the bottle. Then add a few drops of each food colouring.

How to use
Pour some vinegar into the bottle and stand back. The vinegar and baking soda will react together, producing lots of carbon dioxide gas, which will make bubbles (helped by the soap), producing a foaming, frothing eruption. The food colouring will make your erupting lava look spectacular!
